Community
Working for Macy's means being part of a progressive organization that believes deeply in giving back to the communities it serves. Throughout our many regions, Macy's is widely recognized as a caring corporate citizen that leads and supports worthwhile community initiatives. Here are some examples of how we at Macy's are working, in partnership with Macy's, Inc., to improve our communities.
Macy's Foundation
From our earnings, as well as through the Macy's Foundation, Macy's is able to channel much-needed funding directly to charitable organizations, civic programs, community projects, arts/culture programs and educational institutions. Areas of ongoing focus include women's issues, breast cancer awareness and prevention, domestic violence and HIV/AIDS, as well as hunger and secondary education opportunities for disadvantaged minority students.
Earning for Learning
Macy's commitment to education is demonstrated by a unique grants-for-schools initiative, conducted with support from the Macy's Foundation. In the "Earning for Learning" program, schools nationwide can receive financial support through employee and family volunteerism in support of academic programs. Since its introduction in 1998, Macy's associates have provided more than 5,200 hours of substantive educational support for youth.
AHA's Go Red for Women
A lead national sponsor, Macy's supports "Go Red for Women" through sponsorship dollars, exclusive merchandise sales, fundraising events and customer donations. Since the partnership began, the AHA has received a total of $6 million from the full scope of Macy's sponsorship initiatives, not to mention substantial national exposure through our stores, advertising, publicity and online real estate.
Breast Cancer Research
Strong, storewide support of breast cancer research has resulted in contributions of more than $1.5 million to research organizations in the past two years. In addition, Macy's collaborates with Estee Lauder on an exclusive "For the Love of Her Life" campaign, raising nearly $300,000 through merchandise sales for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Thanks for Sharing
Macy's popular holiday gift rewards program - Thanks for Sharing - will contribute $6 million to charity in 2006, a new record for the national campaign. Customers can join the program for $25. In return, they receive a Reward Card valued at 10 percent of all their Macy's credit card net purchases during the holiday period. For each Thanks for Sharing program member, store divisions donate $10 to charity. In addition to the AHA's Go Red for Women, other beneficiaries include the American Red Cross, America's Second Harvest, Boys & Girls Clubs, Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Make a Wish Foundation, United Way and YWCA.
PASSPORT
Macy's PASSPORT event - a West Coast fashion/culture/music extravaganza - has raised more than $20 million in 23 years to benefit HIV/AIDS research, care, prevention and education programs.
LIFEbeat
A new Macy's partner, LIFEbeat is the music industry's charitable organization dedicated to reaching America's youth with the message of HIV/AIDS prevention. For back-to-school 2006, Macy's and LIFEbeat are uniting in an awareness program aimed at high school and college students, complemented by an exclusive, limited-time American Rag LIFEbeat tee that will raise dollars for the organization.
Glamorama
Glamorama, a supernova fashion event and after party held in Chicago and Minneapolis, blends style, sound and celebrity in support of important local charities. Glamorama has raised nearly $2 million for The Art Institute of Chicago and more than $3 million for the Children's Cancer Research Fund in Minneapolis.
United Way
Macy's has a generous history of partnership with United Way (UW), including the designation of National Corporate Leader for parent company, Macy's, Inc. In 2005, the Macy's, Inc. organization contributed more than $13 million to UW chapters across the country.
Reading Is Fundamental
For the first time on a national platform, Macy's will support Reading is Fundamental (RIF) this back-to-school season with an in-store customer donation drive. Customers who donate $3 to RIF will receive a coupon for $10 off a $50 purchase. The program will run in July and August.
Local Giving
Macy's supports many important local charities across the U.S. through a combination of volunteerism, partnerships and regional giving.
Partners in Time Employee Volunteer Program
Macy's Partners in Time employee volunteer program celebrated its 16th
anniversary in 2005. It is an award-winning program adopted by all Macy's
store locations nationwide.
In combination with all Macy's, Inc. divisions, a total of 1.2 million hours has been given in community service nationwide, valued at nearly $20 million. Partners' simple, successful mission, "Sharing Our Time To Make A Difference," has impacted nearly all segments of society.
In 2005 alone, more than 54,000 employees, families and friends volunteered about 108,000 hours of time in all Macy's, Inc. divisions, valued at more than $2 million to nonprofit organizations. Volunteers worked on about 2,520 Partners in Time projects in 2005.
The largest percentage of Partners in Time efforts in 2005 – 27 percent of our projects – was in the area of children and school partnerships. Projects involving women's issues represented 8 percent of volunteer efforts.
With the continuing success of Macy's, Inc.'s "Bag Hunger" food drive, hunger relief represented 13 percent of our volunteer efforts last year. An equivalent 7,250 tons of food, or nearly 20 million meals, has been given since Bag Hunger began in 1998.
In 2005 Macy's was honored for its dedication to community service when Partners in Time received the prestigious "Award for Excellence in Workplace Volunteerism Programs" from the Points of Light Foundation.
